For dry and damaged hair:

  • Have a trim at least every three months.
  • Use a moisturizing shampoo and a rich, creamy conditioner after every wash. Also use a deep-conditioning treatment once a week.
  • Have your hair cut into a style that you can just wash and leave to dry naturally.

For oily hair:

  • If you need to wash your hair daily, use a frequent-wash shampoo for normal/oily hair.
  • Do not use harsh, oil-stripping products and do not wash your hair in too hot water.
  • Use heated appliances on a warm rather than a hot setting.

For fine and limp hair:

  • If your hair looks flat, have some layers cut around the face to make it look fuller.
  • Coloring swells the hair shaft and can give the hair more volume.

Root Regrowth

  • Highlights are more root-friendly than one color all over as the difference in colors will not look so extreme.
  • When growing out permanent color, mask root. Regrowth with a semi-permanent color. It will wash out after 6 to 12 washes.
  • If you are gray at the roots, use a semi-permanent color that matches your natural color. Or try highlights which brighten up gray.

Gray hairs

  • Semi-permanent is a great option when you are starting to go gray. Semi-permanents brighten and enrich (but don’t lighten) your hair by coating it with color that fades out gradually over four to six weeks. Because gray hairs are coarse and do not absorb color as well as the rest of your hair, they will come out a little lighter and you will end up with very natural-looking highlights.
  • If you are doing semi-permanent color at home, remember that the color on the box is the color the gray will become; the rest of your hair will be darker or richer.

Growing out haircut while avoiding the awkward in-between stages

  • When growing out layers, try to close the gap as quickly as possible.
  • If you are trying to add length, add layers at the top and around the face to give the illusion of more hair.
  • Disguise the growing out period by changing color or texture.
  • When your bangs are past your eyes but too short to tuck behind your ears, you can use gel to get them straight back.

Maintaining that salon-hair-styled look back at home

  • Here, basic blow-drying techniques that work on all hair types. Start with the right brush. A flat paddle brush is great for going straight, while a small round brush gives a fuller, curlier result.
  • Blow-dry your hair in sections. With your hair towel-dried, start blow-drying the hair at the nape of the neck. (Pin up excess on top of your head so it stays damp and out of the way). After the bottom section is dried, move to midsection, then to the crown of your head.
  • Aim the blow-dryer in the direction you want your hair to go. If you want volume, pull the brush straight out away from your head. To subtract volume, pull the brush straight down.
