A Guide on Hair Transplantation

The operation involves harvesting a strip of hair bearing scalp from the back of the head, preparing the individual grafts, and then transplanting these onto the bald areas. One graft usually contains two to four hair follicles in what we call a micro or minigraft. The operation is done under local anesthesia with sedation and is quite tedious, lasting for a few hours. The patient is not allowed to wet the hair for four days. Soon after, the transplanted hair will begin to grow and will behave like normal hair.

A four to six days’ leave should be enough for recovery. Most of the complications are minor and very manageable. The more important of these is graft failure, wherein the transplanted hair does not survive and does not grow. This is easily corrected by transplanting more hair on the next session. Most patients need two to three sessions for a more normal-looking dense hairline.

Hair transplants are usually packaged anywhere from $900 to $1200 per session (depending on the number of hair that is grafted.)

For dry and damaged hair:

  • Have a trim at least every three months.
  • Use a moisturizing shampoo and a rich, creamy conditioner after every wash. Also use a deep-conditioning treatment once a week.

  • If you are gray at the roots, use a semi-permanent color that matches your natural color. Or try highlights which brighten up gray.

Gray hairs

  • Semi-permanent is a great option when you are starting to go gray. Semi-permanents brighten and enrich (but don’t lighten) your hair by coating it with color that fades out gradually over four to six weeks. Because gray hairs are coarse and do not absorb color as well as the rest of your hair, they will come out a little lighter and you will end up with very natural-looking highlights.
  • If you are doing semi-permanent color at home, remember that the color on the box is the color the gray will become; the rest of your hair will be darker or richer.

1. Chair Dips: Firms backs of upper arms

Sit on a sturdy chair and place the heels of your hands on the edge of the seat on either side of your hips. Your hands should be directly under your shoulders with fingers pointing slightly in. Bending your elbows, lower our torso until it is just above the floor, then push back up. Only lower as far as you can while maintaining good form (no sagging belies or buttocks in the air, please). Beginners should work up to two sets of eight repetitions; push-up pros can go for three sets of 12 or try straight-leg, knees-off-the-floor push-ups.

3. Upright Rows: Targets shoulders and fronts of upper arms

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees soft, and hold a five-to-eight-pound dumbbell in each hand, palms facing your thighs (you can also use a 10-to-15 pound weighted bar). Keeping your shoulders down, bed your elbows and raise the weights up to your thighs. Repeat 10 times. If this seems easy, add a second set or increase the weight by a pound or two.

4. Biceps curls: Defines fronts of upper arms

Again, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees soft, holding a five-to-eight-pound dumbbell in each hand. Palms should be at high level, facing forward, and elbows are in at your sides. Keeping your elbows touching your sides and your wrists straight, bend your elbows, raising the dumbbells toward your chest. Slowly lower them to the starting position. Do 10, and then try a second set. If that is too easy, increase the weight by a pound or two.
